"Eating leeks and cabbage and potatoes and beans. Probably." Yes...me too!
I'm thrilled I was able to make a personal visit to your corner of the world this past year - I hope to do that again once the weather approaches something more suitable to my sun-loving demeanor.
One other prediction for 2023 - people will continue to live as if nothing is collapsing...
And I love this quote, too: "there comes a time when something has evolved so much that it is probably best to call it something else."
I wish you a peaceful, happy, loving holiday season.
Ben, I hope you will be able to have some Christmas spirit in your barracks and not feel lonely. Is someone coming over to spend some festive days with you? Or are you alone?
A little worried over here in Switzerland - sending positive and warm thoughts!
I've never really had much of a thing for either Christmas (which is quite nice really) or New Year (which I have pretty much always had a special dislike of) - they really are just "days". I shall do something for the solstice on Friday, no doubt, and my favourite of all is the Spring Equinox, so I get excited about that. Thank you for the very kind thoughts though! And come and party on the equinox!
Glad to hear that you’re not worried about spending that time on your own!
My husband and I will begin taking over my parents‘ farm from spring onwards - very doubtful that we will have time to travel through half of Germany in March😉
We‘re planning on founding community living and maybe permaculture farming.
But maybe in time we‘ll visit each other’s projects😊
David Graeber called it feudalism too. Ann Pettifor calls it rentier capitalism. It's telling that we don't really distinguish in conversation, as if it's the same capitalism of even two generations ago.
Anyway! Merry Christmas, I hope the gloves and boots keep you toasty throughout the hard upcoming week 🎅
Debt, by David Graeber is a significantly more intellectually rigorous book than this one, and far more worthy of reading, IMO. IIRC, his feudalism was all about property and rent and as it related to individual debt, and individual (inherited / generational) wealth (it's a while since I read it ... ). Varoufakis's idea is a bit different - I should have mentioned the subtitle "What Killed Capitalism", which is the more (digital / techno-sphere) angle he is coming at.
The gloves and boots are super and a merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Just to let you know, I miss your updates. Hope you’re well
How is the washing machine project going?

Adding books about technofeudalism to my christmas wishlist right now ;) Merry Christmas, I hope the boots and gloves keep you nice and warm 😌
It's not that good!! It's not awful, but it's by no means a must buy!
Well, let's see what Santa brings you :)

I loved Debt, it is excellent. The Democracy Project was also 👨🍳🤌
Interesting that Varoufakis is using a similar term but not building on Graeber. I'll check it out
