Gardening in different parts of the world is so intriguing. I had to pull up all the tomatoes last week and plant fall ones because we've had 21 days over 100 here already and my spring tomatoes are shot (got 100lbs though). Homegrown tomatoes are one of those things you just can't really appreciate, even if you receive some from friends, until you've grown them yourself.
Went through yesterday and just randomly planted cowpeas all over since they love the heat and will provide that groundcover you talk about.
Good luck on the grains, have always wanted to try that.
There aren't many things I wouldn't try as ground cover, and if you can get some pig food from it _and_ they are leguminous and fix nitrogen as well, then why the heck not? I have never tried (black eyed / ) cow peas before though! I might try that when I have some space :}
I've been working up to the grains - trialing really small quantities over the past couple of years. Quinoa and sorghum are my favourites at the moment. Super easy, grow well, and easy to winnow / store. Winter rye is going to be a new one, though. And in reasonable quantities. I am quite excited :)
If I get 40kilos (100lbs) of tomatoes, I will be delighted. But, it's going to be at least a couple more weeks!
Have you read about Siberian oranges? It's fascinating. I might try growing oranges here in a year or two. Do you have a recipe? Feel free to link it here if you do!
Siberian oranges? I guess I need to conduct a bit of google research now... I do have a recipe for bitter orange marmalade - just not in a linkable location - happy to send via email...let me know at jack@myfreshattitude.com

I'm pretty into black currant jam...but nothing - and I mean nothing - beats bitter orange marmalade!
