I might be a bit late with recommendations concerning your ankle. I once sprained my ankle in Australia and had nothing than tape from truetape.de with me. I taped my ankle instead of compressing it to immobility. Next day I went for a light jog with Jack. The website truetape.de helps you with all kind of stuff, but the German site is better than the English one. I wish you a speedy recovery…

Excellent strawberry tip...

Please bring back that wonderful table...

I am sorry to hear about your slip down the steps - I hope the recovery is swift. And in case you haven't considered it already, you could strap on a wooden brace - that 'peg' might help promote the pirate image...

It may need a good support, strapping or cast. Be careful Ben X

Dear Ben, I once sprained my ankle while going down the stairs when leaving work. It was winter, and I was putting on lip balm rather than holding on to the rail or watching where I was going, and I put a foot wrong in my big winter boots with the slightly oversized soles. The advice was to constantly ice and elevate, which is apparently the standard treatment.

Once the swelling and bruising went down, I still had pain and some restricted mobility weeks later, so I went to an orthopedist who did some kind of manual therapy magic and explained that there were tiny little bones in the ankle that aren't really attached to anything, and one of mine had got a bit out of alignment. So she gently pushed it back into place, and it felt much better!

Oh, that does sound like magic!

I've had a good fiddle around with my fingers, and everything seems to be in the right place, and nothing much rattling around in there. If it's still crappy in a couple of weeks, I'm going to give that a go! Thank you, Tanya :)

Urgh…never a good time to have an injury, but I agree with the others. R.I.C.E, rest, ice, compression, elevation. Maybe throw some healing vibes (Stevie Wonder?) into the mix. Best wishes from cloudy Wales

Oh yes, music is definitely a great suggestion!

As Sara wrote, rest, elevation and compression are all important. I once tore all the ligaments on thr outside of my right foot, similar symptoms, balloon ankle etc. Compression helps a lot with both the swelling and support. It's just a shame you can't get tuby-grips in Germany.

Once the swelling is down and you can put weight on it again we can talk about rehabilitation

I don't know what tuby-grips are, but you can definitely get stabilizing ankle braces in Germany. Your local Santitätshaus will have them.

So only light weeding and watering today then? :)

Sure, just bind the ankle up, not so tight as to cut off the flow of blood, but enough to keep it stable.

Hi Ben. Elevate your foot and apply cold compresses- ice packs. Rest .... If it is a sprain. I'm afraid I would say get an x-ray and a doctor's opinion.it may not be broken but there may be other damage/ a tear in a ligament. It's through experience that I say that (nursing training and four children!). I wish you well . X

Oh, I am quite sure the ligament is torn. I tried to sleep last night with it elevated. It was most uncomfortable, but I shall definitely carry on with the cold compress! Thank you :)
