The Piggies Must Be Fed
This has not been a great week. We started off with two nights of frost, and followed it up with two days of rain.
Everything else this week has been about the pigs and their stomachs. Friendly note: if you are in the “ramp up” phase of your self-sufficient journey, you should be concentrating on maximising growing space. This is not compatible with trying to feed three pigs at the same time.
However… I did. Ahh well.
Currently drying in the drying room are about 3,000 sweetcorn seeds and more sunflower seeds than I can possibly count. Let’s call it 5,000, shall we? If I manage to get enough space for them by next year (I will), this is going to smush a massive dent in the pig-food bill for next year, and maybe reduce it to zero for the year after. With some other plans as well.
Look what I cycled past this week.
Since then, I’ve cycled past it another three times. Each time, filling up my massive old courier back with about 20 kilos of apples. If you or I ate, let’s say, 6 apples in one sitting, we might feel a little dicky. The pigs can put away 20 kilos in one sitting and still not think it too much.
I have also been making fence posts
and have devised a marked improvement in the compost-year:
I’ll probably blog about it. People like bog posts about compost.
