Week 39 and the nights are really noticeably drawing in. Piggie supper time is now about half past 7 in the evening, and it’s well into proper twilight by the time I’m walking back up to the loft.
Because the pumpkins were such a disaster this year (my fault, this isn’t one I can blame on the weather), there isn’t much left in the garden besides beans. I hope we get a few more sunny days in. They are all growing wonderfully, which is exactly what I don’t want any more. I want them to stop growing, start dying and for the beans to dry on the vine. A long winter of dried beans and potatoes, with no tomato sauces, is going to get a whole lot less interesting without the beans.
The job list for this week looks a bit like this:
Start making fence posts for the pig field.
Build the frame for the kitchen cabinets in the loft
Carry on with the insulation of the loft
Get the rhubarb ready for winter. This seems early.
Tidy up the wood depot area
Dig up the last two rows of potatoes
Dig over the roots bed, load it up with compost for next year’s potatoes.
One more side of the potager (1 down, 23 to go!)
Strawberries. I didn’t get around to them last week.
I’m also writing a blog post about trees. It’s taking a lot longer than I was expecting.
